Women's Mental Health

Women are not like men when it comes to mental health. We have unique emotional, physical, and sexual responses to the stressors in our lives. In addition, unlike men, we cycle, and so do our moods. Reproductive psychiatry is a specialty that treats women for emotional distress related to PMS and PMDD, sub-fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, breastfeeding, and menopause.

We offer:

  • Treatment for postpartum depression or anxiety disorder.
  • Minimizing the effects of PMS or PMDD
  • Finding the "right fit" birth control method for the "moody" woman
  • Planning for healthy pregnancies for women with pre-existing psychiatric disorders, and/or women who take medications for mood or anxiety problems.  This includes consultation about how to minimize risks of psychiatric medications while trying to conceive, during pregnancy, and while breastfeeding, and about alternatives to medication.
  • Reducing the risk for postpartum depression.
  • Treating depression or anxiety during the transition to menopause (perimenopause).

The Following Services are provided at University Women’s Healthcare’s Mind Body Center

  • Assessment, diagnosis, education for women’s mental health problems
  • Medication evaluation and management
  • Short-term counseling or referral to appropriate therapist
